BCCT BREAKFAST BRIEFING

Overseas Brits: Obtaining the New Right to Vote & What Needs to Change

BCCT is hosting a breakfast meeting on the topic Overseas Brits New Rights to Vote How to Register and what needs to change. Former Director of the Chamber at the Brits Overseas Voters Forum, Bruce Darrington will be sharing his insights on the topic with the BCCJ community. Despite the new update, exercising one’s vote overseas is fraught with challenges and the Forum is designed to support Brits in making a real contribution to the political process back in the UK and exercising their democratic right to vote. Bruce will also touch on some of the other work the forum is doing to support British citizens living overseas such as frozen pensions, access to UK bank accounts and discriminatory housing loan interest.

As from 16 January all Brits who once lived in the UK can now register to vote in UK national elections and referenda.

But voting is still fraught with challenges. Bruce will not only explain some of the problems about actually exercising the vote in practice, but will also explain what the many issues are that can and perhaps should now be taken up, such as Frozen Pensions.  He will also explain the Forum’s novel strategy to give Overseas Brits real influence going forward. The Presentation, which includes references comparable countries, will be followed by a participants discussion.
